There are 18 candidiates running for seven trustee seats

Jeremy Smith is running for a trustee seat at the Cowichan Valley school board.

He said he is running because he has three children in grade school, and being involved in their education has made him realize more clearly the role that a school plays in a child’s development, and he would like to help.

Smith said he believes the success in district schools can be measured by the later success of society as a whole.

“I plan to keep mental-health services and awareness in focus with the board, as well as alternative-learning programs, diversity education and support for fine arts and other electives,” he said.

“I firmly believe above all else that every student should feel welcome and safe in our schools. This means looking at how schools are providing safe places for students, availability of accredited counselling staff, ongoing mental-health awareness training for all district employees, and steps that our board can take to ensure students are receiving the support that they need in a timely manner.”

Smith said he feels that a continued partnership with Cowichan Tribes and a focus on Indigenous education in all district schools is an essential component in the community.

“I want to help make decisions to keep all the great aspects of our school system in place, and play a role in helping to continuously improve our schools for future generations,” he said.
