Lake Cowichan was not immune to the significant rainfall and was experiencing flooding Monday morning along with the rest of the Cowichan Valley as rain continued to inundate the region and the province.
Spokesman for the town, Chief Administrative Officer Joe Fernandez, said workers had to set up bypasses on some roads as water has blocked some areas, making driving difficult.
They included Cowichan Avenue, and Stone and Wellington roads.
“The water is pretty high in the river right now, and the rain has slowed down a bit this morning, so we’ll see how the rest of the day goes,” he said Monday morning.
The town offered sand bags to those who called.
Sahtlam firefighters and the RCMP were on Highway 18 that morning to deal with two incidents: a motor vehicle crash just west of Hillcrest and also a mudslide near Skutz Falls that jutted out a short distance into the westbound lane.
More streets than could be tallied were affected by or closed outright by water.
Pine Street was so wet a kayaker could be seen paddling through where it intersected with Sahtlam Road.
