An electrical issue with a heat pump in the ceiling at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre prompted a full evacuation on Friday afternoon, Jan. 4.
Smoke appeared in an upstairs room around 3:30 p.m.
“Staff followed the emergency procedures and evacuated the building,” said North Cowichan spokesperson Natasha Horsman.
Nobody was injured.
South End firefighters and an electrician attended. Damage was minimal and after investigation into the cause of the malfunction, the issue was fixed.
The entire ordeal took less than an hour before patrons were readmitted to the facility.
