Freak hailstorm batters the Cowichan Valley on Friday

An ominous, dark cloud loomed over the Cowichan Valley on Friday afternoon. One moment it was sunny with the big black cloud in the distance, and in the next moment people were seeking shelter as torrential hail pelted down on them, thunder cackled overhead and lightning streaked across the sky.

The photos and videos readers shared on the Citizen’s Facebook post were incredible. It looked like the middle of winter for some.

“Looking quite like December in Maple Bay!” wrote Krystal Pritchette under the Citizen’s video of the storm in Crofton Friday.

Her post featured a back painted deck white with hail.

“It’s like a winter wonderland on Emily Street!” added Lisa Pickard.

Her photo featured white driveways and a dusting of white over the lawn.

Some readers wondered what the fuss was about.

“Right now….???? Woah. Duncan is dry and I went out in a t-shirt!” wrote Brea Vlodder.

“Beautiful sunny day in Glenora!” wrote Margaret O’Neil, alongside a summer-like photo of her yard.

Christine Carlson replied that she was the same way out in Lake Cowichan, too.

“Duncan-ites need to look out the window….to that ominous black cloud headed this way, lol,” wrote Leanne Irving.

“Such a crazy thing to see! Someone must have stepped on a really big spider,” wrote Hannah Rukus.

Especially hard hit areas included Crofton and Maple Bay, which appeared to be at the centre of the storm, shredding leaves on plants and putting pock marks in fruit and vegetables still out in the garden awaiting harvest.

According to environment Canada, more rain is on the way this week. Whether that turns into another epic hail storm remains to be seen.
