Duncan’s Silver Bridge painting project on schedule

Last week it was announced the Koksilah River Bridge work’s completion date had been pushed back until the end of February 2019 leaving motorists to face another couple of months of traffic delays. Good news is also on the horizon, however. The painting project currently underway at the Silver Bridge in Duncan is still on schedule.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the painting will conclude by the end of December.

It won’t be smooth sailing for a little while after that though.

“When this work is completed, the scaffolding and plastic containment will be removed, allowing traffic and pedestrian patterns to return to normal,” said a ministry spokesperson. “The ministry thanks commuters, pedestrians, cyclists and the Cowichan Tribes for their ongoing patience and support during the Cowichan River (Silver) Bridge painting project.”

The 77-metre-long twin steel bridges over the Cowichan River are located in Duncan on Highway 1, approximately 200 metres north of the Boys Road intersection.

The west bridge was built in 1950 and the east bridge was built in 1978.

Both required seismic and safety upgrades to bring them up to modern-day standards. Those were completed earlier this year.
