The Cowichan Valley Regional District says it is keeping a close watch on flooding throughout the region.

“Rivers are responding to recent rainfall, and with more rain anticipated through the middle of next week, a high stream advisory is in effect,” the CVRD noted in a press release issued on Sunday, Jan. 3. “The public is advised to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high-streamflow period.”

Localized flooding problems are continuing to occur and are being addressed by local jurisdictions. The CVRD has activated a Regional Emergenty Operations Centre to monitor conditions and assist with flood protection.

Cowichan Tribes has issued evacuation alerts for several areas, and an evacuation order for one specific location.

“Although there are no evacuation alerts or orders in the rest of the region at this time, it is still recommended that residents in low-lying areas or areas prone to flooding are prepared to evacuate. This includes gathering essential items like identification, medications, valuable documents and any immediate care needs in the event evacuation is required.”

“Residents will be given as much notice as possible if an evacuation is required; however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions. The CVRD will continue to provide updates as conditions warrant.”

Emergency information, including evacuation alerts and orders, will be posted to the Emergency Information page of the CVRD website.
