The Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team has begun their 11-day journey from the north end of Vancouver Island to the south to raise money to put an end to childhood cancer.

Cowichan residents looking to be a part of the event will have to wait until Week 2 of the ride when the team travels from Nanaimo to the west coast and then on to Greater Victoria via Duncan.

On Monday, Oct. 1 the group will arrive in Chemainus at the Best Western Plus Chemainus Inn at 2:45 p.m. and depart from there the following morning at 7:50 a.m. bound for breakfast at the Chemainus Legion until 9 a.m. From there they head over to Chemainus Elementary School for a 15-minute stop starting at 9:05 before a two-hour ride to Lake Cowichan. Arriving at Lake Cowichan School at 11:17 a.m., the riders will have lunch at the school before heading over to Palsson Elementary school for a brief stop, starting at 11:55 a.m.

The afternoon will feature stops at Tansor Elementary (12:43 p.m.), Drinkwater Elementary (1:03 p.m.), Queen Margaret’s School (1:24 p.m), and Maple Bay Elementary (1:59 p.m.) before the traditional community stop at Beverly Corners starting at 2:30 p.m. There’ll be head shaves (more participants are needed) and a barbecue and community fun.

The group will then ride over to the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment and load up their bikes so they can travel to Shawnigan Lake School for a 3:33 p.m. appearance. They’ll head back north for dinner at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit at 5 p.m. to end their evening with a buffet dinner, auctions, raffles and more. Music is provided by the Jam Factory. The first 10 people to make a $100 minimum donation will receive a booking for a circuit ride at a later date. Tickets to the event are $50 and are available at Coast Capital Savings at Beverly Corners, the Duncan and Mill Bay community policing offices, and the CSS Office at 103-225 Canada Ave.

On Wednesday Oct. 3, the riders will have breakfast at Boston Pizza in Duncan before visiting the students at École Cobble Hill Elementary at 8:38 a.m. After a quick stop at Shawnigan Lake School starting at 9:13 a.m., the riders make their final Cowichan stop at Mill Bay Centre starting at 9:56 a.m. Then it’s over the Malahat to the south Island.
