“The community came through!”

That’s the word from Lake Cowichan librarian Monica Finn.

She put out a call for Lego donations prior to spring break as staff at the library really wanted to be able to offer an ongoing Lego club similar to the ones at other libraries, including the Duncan-based branch.

Costly to buy, Finn hoped residents around the Lake would look through their toyboxes and donate anything they weren’t using.

“We had quite a few people [donate],” she said. “Often their grandchildren aged out of Lego so they brought us some.”

The new collection was bolstered by additional bricks from the Nanaimo Harbourfront branch.

“I think we’re going to split it between two bins so the kids can dig through it easily,” she said. “Our thanks to the community. It was really great,” Finn added. “I know other places have tried and failed to get Lego so I wasn’t sure what to expect.”

Borrowing the Duncan branch’s collection, 22 youth enjoyed a spring break Lego session on March 22. Those kids and others will now be able to participate in a weekly Lego session — Wednesdays at 4 p.m.

“This is a free, drop in event best suited for children 6-12 years but anyone old enough to refrain from eating Lego is welcome,” Finn said.

The first weekly session had 11 builders and word is still getting out.

“Everybody’s been calm and sharing and it’s going really well,” she said.

April events at the library:

All April, the library is celebrating National Poetry Month with a display of books and audiobooks. Drop in and see what you find.
