A nine-year-old child is dead after traffic incident yesterday morning in Shawinigan Lake.

According to media relations officer Sgt. Annie Linteau, the child was a passenger in a car that went off the road Sunday at about 8 a.m. on Shawinigan Lake Road, near Sooke Lake Road.

"The investigation has so far determined that a vehicle travelling north bound lost control and struck a hydro pole," Linteau said in a media release. "A nine-year-old child passenger sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident and has since succumbed to their injuries. The 49-year-old driver sustained minor injuries."

Police say the preliminary indication is that speed may have been a factor in this incident and are asking anyone with any information to contact Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
