The Cowichan Valley Basket Society was the beneficiary of a food drive Nov. 27 held by Const. Vanessa Fields and Const. Bert Calvo with the assistance of M’akola Housing Society, the Cowichan Community Policing & Engagement Society, and Superstore.
The RCMP officers brought the Indigenous Policing canoe to the Superstore in Duncan for a Capsize the Canoe food drive.
All told, $1,100 in cash donations and 1,533 pounds of food, valued at $5,000, were collected.
The Duncan Indigenous Policing Section partnered with the Westshore Indigenous Policing Section and Const. Cole Brewer in order to have the canoe available for the initiative.
“The Duncan RCMP would like to thank all of the volunteers from the RCMP Cowichan Valley Community Policing, the manager and asset protection officers from Superstore, the assisted living manager from M’akola Housing Society, and the manager from the Cowichan Valley Basket Society, who came out and spent the day spreading cheer and collecting donations,” said RCMP Island District spokesperson Cpl. Alex Bérubé. “The goal to fill the canoe was met and the Duncan Indigenous Policing Section is looking forward to participating and organizing similar events.”
