A new store specializing in curated vintage and “preloved” clothing, home decor, organic smoothies, smoothie bowls and juices has opened up in Shawnigan Lake.

The store, which opened just last week, is called PALM and is located at 1770 Shawnigan Lake/Mill Bay Rd. where Beaux Boheme was located.

PALM, which is owned by Shawnigan Lake newcomer Cadie Piecuch, is all about reusing second-hand clothing and other items in a sustainable way, and using all organic produce in its smoothies, smoothie bowls and juices.

Piecuch also owns two online businesses, one in which she shares healthy plant-based recipes and the other is centred around zero-waste living, and she said she always wanted to own a brick-and-mortar business centred on sustainable and healthy living.

“I’m having fun with it and having the business is a really great way to meet people and connect with the community,” Piecuch said.

“Shawnigan Lake is a great place to live and the community really supports small businesses like mine.”

PALM is open Wednesday to Friday from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed Monday and Tuesday.

You can connect with the store at the Instagram account Palm.the.shop

Customers at Duncan’s Dairy Queen helped to raise $15,500 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation on Miracle Treat Day on Aug. 11.

Net proceeds from the whopping 1,968 Blizzard Treats sold in the restaurant that day, plus a number of donations, will be donated to the BCCHF, one of 12 Children’s Miracle Network hospital foundations across Canada.

Miracle Treat Day is a 21-year tradition by Dairy Queens across Canada, making miracles happen for children and their families.

What’s raised local stays local, so every dollar donated from Duncan’s Dairy Queen will go directly to the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

“Thank you to our local customers and to our hard working team, led by managers Emily and Marie,” said the restaurant’s Facebook page.

“So far this year with Miracle Treat Day, out donations to the BCCHF are $20,292.”

Dairy Queen employees, franchisees, volunteers and stakeholders come together throughout the year to help raise funds that allow children’s hospitals to provide the best care possible.

Since the partnership began 38 years ago in 1984, Dairy Queen has become a top contributor to Children’s Miracle Network, with more than $46 million raised to date in Canada alone.

Economic Development Cowichan is creating road maps to improved internet and cellular connectivity for four of Cowichan’s most under-served communities.

If you live, work, or have interests in one of these areas — which includes the Ditidaht First Nation, Cowichan Station, the Cowichan Lake Region, and Thetis and Penelakut Islands — then EDC needs your help to understand your community’s digital aspirations and what’s holding you back.

Join EDC for an in-person conversation to explore ways that connectivity and technology can enhance your community or business, and discuss barriers that need to be overcome to achieve your digital goals.

“We’re excited to discover how connectivity and technology can protect and augment what people love about these communities,” said Brittany Taylor, acting manager of Economic Development Cowichan.

“One community might be interested in using agricultural technology to improve the livelihoods of farmers, while another may want to enable home-based businesses to reach customers around the world. Tourism, remote healthcare and education, and emergency response are some other topics that might come up.”

EDC invites you to join the conversation.

You can register online at https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Member-eBlast—-CVRD-Community-Connectivity-Conversations.html?soid=1103956636254&aid=dilltoxE-Ws for the sessions, which will run from Sept. 13 to Sept. 17, focusing on the four underserved communities.
