The identity of a male body found along the Cowichan River Thursday is being investigated by the B.C. Coroner's Service, Lake Cowichan RCMP say.

Cpl. Krista Hobday said it's unknown if the body is that of Calgary's William Shearer who slipped in the dangerous river on April 13.

"We've notified his family that we've recovered a body," she told the News Leader Pictorial, noting there are no other folks missing in the area at present.

A fisherman found the corpse hanging in shoreline brush by a fisherman at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday, May 24.

RCMP responded and located a fully clothed male at the river's edge, just south of Spring Pool, she says in a press release.

Cowichan Search & Rescue arrived and recovered the body on behalf of the coroner's service.
