Bob Day is running for re-election as mayor of Lake Cowichan in the upcoming municipal election.

Day is facing one contender, current town councillor Tim McGonigle, for the mayor’s seat.

Day said that since he was first elected to council in 2008, he has seen the Town of Lake Cowichan rise up once again to become a blossoming vibrant town and the centrepiece of the west-end of the regional district.

He said in a byelection in late 2019, he was elected mayor and, together with a dedicated council and staff, they kept the business of the town moving forward.

“There were challenges as we adapted to unprecedented development pressures, a pandemic, an old-growth logging protest, challenges related to homelessness, mental health and addictions and lastly, record breaking tourism seasons,” Day said.

“The good news is, we rose to the challenges and a great deal of good work was accomplished, despite all of these disruptions.”

Day said that for the next four years, the bulk of council’s focus needs to be on infrastructure renewal, tourism management and attracting more attainable housing development for all ages and income levels.

He said it’s also time to perform an organizational review to ensure the town has adequate staffing to manage the quality of services its residents expect as the community continues to grow.

Day said advocacy is a high priority for him as well.

“I want to make the time for mayor and council to engage in the community through a series of open meetings, so together we can build strategies and solutions,” he said.

“There are many services that the regional, provincial and federal governments provide for us that sometimes do not meet the needs of our community. That’s when your mayor and council need to step up and advocate for more or better. I hope that my experience and leadership will earn your vote for the position of mayor of the Town of Lake Cowichan on Oct. 15.”
