Gilbert Beaudry was back at Lake Cowichan town council Tuesday, Feb. 26, hoping that his recent actions have pulled his property at 87/ 89 South Shore Rd. over its last hurdles.
He’s had trouble because he bought the building thinking the illegal suites in it would be approved easily by council. Unfortunately, Beaudry’s requests have only compounded his problems and the last time he came before the mayor and council, it was decided he should work with the building inspector to see how to return the property to simply a commercial site.
Beaudry said, “I took everything out of the 89 South Shore suites and put it onto the 87 side for storage.
“They’ve moved out of the 87 hair salon. And Dennis [Young, the Town of Lake Cowichan building inspector] came down there and inspected, so it’s back to commercial. It’s empty. And there’s no more residential people living down there.
“I’m going to advertise for commercial renters. When I find commercial renters, it will be explained to them that they will have to get an occupancy permit and a business licence to deal with this. I’ll do anything that’s required to help them, to make it commercial.
“It’s not residential at all any more. [Coun.] Lorna [Vomacka] and [Mayor] Rod [Peters] were kind enough to come and look at it, too,” he said.
Peters asked Town CAO Joe Fernandez if Young had reported back yet.
“Yes, he has,” said Fernandez. “But, I have to review it and then I’ll be providing a recommendation back to council.”
It will come to the finance and administration committee meeting on March 12.
