Alison Nicholson, who has lived in Cowichan Station for more than 30 years, is running for re-election in the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s Electoral Area E (Cowichan Station/Sahtlam/Glenora).

Nicholson said her passion is volunteering on projects like creating the HUB at Cowichan Station and caring for the Koksilah watershed.

“People coming together to tackle a community problem is incredibly inspiring,” she said.

“I studied ecology and spent my career working to understand and soften our environmental footprint. I am grateful for the deep wisdom First Nations people offer in this regard.”

Nicholson said that if re-elected, she promises to continue to listen, respectfully ask questions, and support solutions that will best serve families in her area and its watersheds into an uncertain future.

She said one of her main priorities is water.

“I’m worried for people in Area E who are already feeling real impacts from low water in summer or floods in winter,” Nicholson said.

“Because water connects everything, we need a ‘whole of watershed’ approach to better care for water into the future. I’m participating in several projects to help advance watershed protection.”

She said another of her priorities is modernizing land-use regulations.

“We need to protect rural areas which feed us, provide water, mitigate the storms and heat of climate change, support mental well being, and offer economic and recreation opportunities,” Nicholson said.

“At the same time, we need to focus growth wisely to provide the housing we desperately need.”

Nicholson said building relationships with First Nations is also important to her.

“In the CVRD, we are privileged to live on the territories of Coast Salish and Nuu-chah-nulth people,” she said.

“We are stronger together and we have much to learn. I also need to understand community concerns and needs and I do this by reaching out to residents and listening carefully to everyone, not just the loudest. It is extremely important to involve the community before making a decision and being open about a decision taken and one’s rationale for it.”
