Volunteers are stepping up to the plate to help keep Lake Cowichan’s 50-plus Activity Centre up and running on a tight budget, but even more are needed.

After facing some financial uncertainty, the seniors’ centre closed its doors for a summer hiatus and restructuring period but it has since reopened as of Sept. 11.

Thus far, all regular activities have resumed.

President Ginny Saboe said things were moving along well in the first week of the centre’s re-birth.

“It’s wonderful,” she said. “We are still short on volunteers so that is one big thing. We are looking for help in the centre constantly.”

She said there’s a lot of help in the kitchen but because they aren’t in a position to hire employees, they’re going to try to keep that position and the janitorial duties volunteer-based.

“It might work, it might not, we’re going to give it our best shot,” Saboe said.

Folks interested in kitchen and/or janitorial volunteering opportunities are welcomed and encouraged to call her directly at 250-710-7327.

A welcome back fall dance is slated for Saturday, Sept. 30. All are invited. Kids under 12 get in free.

“We’re going to have three different groups of musicians,” she said.

There’ll also be two kinds of chili and sweets.

Tickets are $10 apiece and will be available at the door.
