Candace Spilsbury: A passionate force for kids, education and community

When it comes to education, Candace Spilsbury is a well-known name in the Cowichan Valley. She has served as principal of Koksilah school, director of Elementary Education and a trustee on the board of education for 10 years, including six years as board chair. She is an effective communicator, an accomplished collaborator and a strong advocate for change and improvement.

Spilsbury has also demonstrated significant commitment and contribution to the broader Cowichan Valley community. She is a founding member and past chair of Social Planning Cowichan, which has worked on cultural relations, affordable housing, homelessness, and child care. She is past chair of Literacy Now Cowichan working to enhance literacy across all ages, cultures and geographic locations and past chair of Success by 6 dedicated to the improvement of early learning. She works tirelessly to support quality of life for all Cowichan citizens.

Spilsbury looks forward to effectively tackling the challenges that will face the new board of education, including:

• Recent student enrolment increases and projected continuation of this growth creating the need for more classrooms;

• Bargaining for the new contract with the Teacher’s Union in 2019;

• Ongoing implementation of the new curriculum and reporting requirements and supporting teachers in this process

• Continuing to increase the graduation rate for all students by working closely with staff, parents and the community.

On Oct. 20 vote for Candace Spilsbury for school trustee, a proven winner who will, as part of the Students First Team, work hard to achieve success for all students, create community collaboration in decision making and deliver financial accountability.
