Do you know someone who truly deserves a break? Maybe someone working tirelessly to stay afloat in uncertain economic times who still takes time to help others? Or parents of a child with health challenges struggling to make ends meet?

We all face challenges at one time or another, but a Campbell River business owner is hoping a day-long wildlife excursion will provide the rejuvenating break a dozen deserving Islanders can use.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community that has supported us so much over the years,” says Jack Springer, owner of Campbell River Whale Watching and Adventure Tours. “We’d like to make it an annual event.”

“Hurricane Jack,” as he’s known, has been plying local waters for decades and uses that knowledge to inform and entertain guests on whale, wildlife and bear-watching tours that have earned a five-star TripAdvisor rating.

“Spending time in nature, and especially with the amazing creatures that make their home here, can have revitalizing effect,” Jack says. “We’re honoured to be able to share that experience with people who might not otherwise have that opportunity.”

Experience the wonder of nature in our own backyard

Up to 12 guests, nominated by the public, will enjoy a six-hour whale and bear-watching trip on one of Springer’s passenger vessels in early August. Travelling the east coast of Vancouver Island, through Discovery Passage and Johnstone Strait, likely wildlife to be spotted include humpbacks and orcas, Dall’s porpoise and Pacific white-sided dolphins, black bears and eagles. A knowledgeable guide will lead the excursion which also includes a full lunch from Campbell River’s famed Grey Dog Café.
