Senior girls soccer teams from both Brentwood College School and Shawnigan Lake School were on hand May 13-14 for the 2A Island Championships in North Saanich and both have come away with a berth in the 2024 provincial championship tournament.

Both teams went 2-1 in three games played in their respective pools, each ranking second heading into the playoffs where they met each other in the bronze medal game.

Shawnigan Lake School prevailed over Brentwood by a 3-1 score while Mark Isfeld beat SMUS for gold. With four berths to the provincials from the Island, the final four teams all move on.

The 2A B.C. championships are May 29-31 in Burnaby.

Meanwhile, after winning the senior girls soccer 1A Island Championship title in two of the last three years, QMS finished third behind Pacific Christian School and St. Margaret’s on May 7 at the Sherman Road soccer fields. Even so, they clinched a berth in this year’s provincial championships May 30-June 1 in Kamloops.

QMS beat Ucluelet 8-0 to start their tournament on a high, before beating Duncan Christian School 3-1 in a closer battle.

QMS was downed 2-1 in kicks by St. Margaret’s in their third pool play game, forcing them to play for third place against North Island Secondary School instead of in the gold medal game. Not ones to back down, QMS went on to beat NISS to capture the bronze.

Fellow Duncan team, Duncan Christian School was sixth of eight teams in the 1A Island tournament, finishing with a 1-3 record.

In 3A action, Cowichan Secondary played in their Island Championships at Nanaimo District Secondary School May 13-14. Cow High was seventh in the eight team tournament.
