Peewees nab Cowichan football's only weekend win

Minor football's Week 4 results

Peewee

It was a nail-biter but the peewee Cowichan Bulldogs came away with an 8-2 victory over the Oceanside Lions in Qualicum Beach on Saturday, Sept. 21.

"It was a defensive battle for most of the game as our defence walked away with interceptions on the day, said head coach Justin Young. The picks came from Rylend "Blondi" Monti, Liam Freeland, and Rylen Heyer.

Defensive tackle Carter Thorne stepped up to replace starter Jace Kosak-Joseph who had stepped in as centre for the game while senior defensive end Troy Elliot was another standout defender.

"On offence the lone score belonged to Heyer on a 20 yard quarterback draw.

"Offence was far and few between on the day for us but we had the glimmers of excellence. If we can get things polished up we are going to be an even bigger force to be reckoned with," Young said.

The peewee Bulldogs play host to Southside on Saturday, Sept. 28 at McAdam Park. Kickoff is 11 a.m.

Junior Bantam

The junior bantam Bulldogs lost 37-0 to the Lions in Oceanside this past weekend.

"We were without five starting players, including four on offence," noted head coach Mike Williams. Backup quarterback Alex Erickson led the offence.

"We struggled with giving Alex enough protection so our running was forced to pick up the slack," Williams said. "Oceanside was a lot more aggressive with strong tacking on defence so we had very little success."

A bright spot on defence was the play of Junior Thomas.

"Junior can be a force up front and today he was," said the coach. "I am proud of the way a lot of our players stepped into different positions when called upon and did the best they could. We will learn from this game and will get better for next week. Getting players back from vacations and other commitments will help our team."

The JB Bulldogs play host to Southside on Saturday, Sept. 28 at McAdam Park. Kickoff is 12:30 p.m.

Bantam

The bantam Bulldogs' record dropped to 3-1 following a tough 28-21 battle with Nanaimo on Sunday.

"I'm very proud of the team after being down 28-7 at halftime," said head coach Tyler Gavin. "Defensively, Wesley Heppell was outstanding flying all over the field, making big plays against his former team and offensively, our offensive line once again played great."

The Bulldogs had rushing touchdowns from Jaipaul Bains and Judd Sheen.

"Dylan Drew had a tremendous game on block knocking multiple players over all game," added the coach.

The bantam Bulldogs travel to Comox this coming weekend.

Midget

It was another tough loss for the midget Bulldogs this Sunday against Nanaimo.

"We were still suffering from injuries from last week and absenteeism," explained head coach Opie Williams, adding that with 14 players away or injured, a lot of players were playing Iron Man football.

"Playing both ways is tough," Williams said. "I would like to thank the players that step up and keep fighting hard and the coaches for keeping track of all the substitutions."

The coach said if they didn't have bad luck in the first quarter they would not have had any luck at all.

"The bounces always seem to go Nanaimo's way," Williams said. "Our defence played strong and made some big stops but offence could not capitalize and didn't have any momentum. Special teams were not able to help out at all either and Nanaimo was getting some good field position."

The squad has a much needed bye this coming weekend.

"I am looking forward to getting those 14 players back," Williams said.
