Morozov hat-trick not enough for Kraken win

Lake Cowichan Kraken looking for their first win

Despite a talented group of new recruits the Lake Cowichan Kraken are still looking for their first win of the 2024-25 season under new head coach Rich Chernomaz.

As of Sept. 25, the Kraken had played two home games and four on the road and been on the short end of the score board in all six, including losing two straight to the Port Alberni Bombers by a combined 18-7 score.

The team has showed grit and skill, however, with two of their six games resulting in overtime and four of the six lost by two goals or fewer.

In their Sept. 22 home game against the winless Saanich Predators, the Kraken battled back from a 2-1 deficit after two periods to take a 3-2 lead. Midway through the third period, Saanich got the equalizer and the game went to overtime. Saanich got off three shots to Lake Cowichan's none in the extra time, and that proved to be the difference as one got by goalie Josh Hope giving the Predators their first win of the young season.

A bright spot for the Kraken was the play of Laroslav Morozov, who netted a hat-trick for his first three goals of the campaign.

Lake Cowichan's Jagjeevan Chahal (2) Bevin Williams, Maddox Derewianka, Jananga Mangala, and Benjamin Bertrand all picked up assists on the Morozov goals.

The Kraken played host to the Victoria Cougars on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena but the result was not available before the Gazette's press time.
