After placing second at the Friendship Cup earlier this season, Cowichan Secondary’s field hockey team has won the John Ferreira Memorial Cup.
The Ferreira tournament, hosted by Cow High, is played in memory of John Ferreira, a former Cowichan Secondary and community coach.
“I didn’t get to know him but I’ve heard he was such a wonderful person and leader and really made this sport an option for athletes in the valley,” said current Cow High Coach Caitlin Erickson.
This year’s tournament featured seven area teams in two tiers.
The Tier 1 title was contested by three area school’s top teams, with Cowichan coming out on top, followed by Brentwood and then Shawnigan Lake.
“We’ve had a really good start to our season,” Erickson said of Cowichan Secondary’s team. “Every game we seem to get better and better and it’s nice to see we’re starting to work as a team and really trust each other on the field.”
In the second tier, Queen Margaret’s beat out Kelsey for the top spot, while Shawnigan’s second team and Brentwood’s second team rounded out the foursome.
Next up for field hockey enthusiasts is the Bridgman Cup, arguably the province’s oldest field hockey tournament, which will be held this year at the University of Victoria.
“It’s the biggest tournament we go to before provincials,” Erickson said. “I’m excited to see how the team plays against some of those teams from the mainland.”
