The Youth Bowling National Tenpin Championships were held May 6-8 at McCurdy Lanes in Kelowna and Duncan’s First Family of Bowling was there.
Based at Duncan Lanes, the Hawkes family had three members at the event, with Penelope competing in the bantam girls category, her mom Brittany as the girls’ team coach, and her brother Axel, bowling in the bantam boys group — all as part of Team B.C.
Competing in her second consecutive Nationals, Penelope recovered from a slow start to catch fire late. She averaged 120.17 but got stronger as the tournament went on finishing with 141, 115 and 161 (her high game) to win her last three matches and improve to five wins in 12 matches and sixth place overall.
Meanwhile, Axel won seven of 12 matches averaging 144.83 with a high game of 179 to secure the bronze medal for Team B.C.
Junior Boy Zander Sterling of McCurdy Lanes was the only other medalist in singles for B.C. as he picked up the silver, winning eight of his 12 matches.
In team competition the Team B.C. boys finished with nine points from six matches for sixth place and the B.C. girls team finished with six-and-a-half points from six matches for seventh place.
