The Town of Ladysmith said it is taking steps to implement a COVID-19 vaccination policy for staff.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to present serious public health challenges requiring community-level mobilization to ensure we are all doing everything we can to protect our family, friends and neighbours,” reads a news release from the town.

Staff who are unable to fulfill the proof of vaccination requirement will be asked to complete regular rapid testing before arriving at work. The BC Centre for Disease Control is making tests available to all local governments due to the essential services provided by employees.

The town policy to be implemented in the coming months will also apply to contractors as well as town volunteers, such as members of the public serving on committees of council that meet in person.

The town said it has provided its staff with education and resources throughout the COVID-19 pandemic on the merits of vaccination, as well as implemented additional health and safety measures to protect staff while carrying out their respective duties.

The Town of Ladysmith has 129 employees across five divisions – office of the chief administrative officer, corporate services, community services, infrastructure services, finance and Ladysmith Fire/Rescue.
