Safety improvements coming to major Ladysmith intersection

Protected left-turn signals will be installed at the Roberts Street/Transfer Beach Boulevard intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway

Protected left-turn signals will be installed at the Roberts Street/Transfer Beach Boulevard intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway to improve safety.

The work was done over two days on Wednesday, Dec. 11, and Thursday, Dec. 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this time, the passing lanes and left-turn lanes at this intersection were closed.

The installation of protected left turn lights at this intersection is welcomed by Ladysmith Fire Rescue Chief Chris Geiger.

"This intersection has been the site of several serious accidents in recent years. The installation of a protected left-turn signal will significantly enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians, and all other road users," said Geiger.

ICBC data shows that since 2019, there have been 50 crashes at this intersection, 30 of which involved injuries or fatalities.

Once the new signals have been installed, drivers will only be permitted to turn left on a green arrow, ensuring a protected period for left turns.

The upgrades are funded by the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure as the Trans-Canada Highway is a provincial roadway.

"This prudent safety measure will benefit everyone who uses the intersection, which serves as a vital link between our charming heritage downtown and the rest of the province," says Nicholas Pescod, the Town's Communications & Engagement Specialist.
