Longevity John turns up the heat on Showroom stage in time for summer

Enjoy an out of this world performance from good vibe veterans Space Junk Removal Service on June 2

Longevity John is ready to burst into the sweet sounds of summer with a June lineup sure to please the senses —a perfect precursor for the epic and upcoming 39 Days of July festival which debuts at Charles Hoey Park on June 28.

On June 1, hip-hop fans will want to throw their hands in the air, and wave them like they just don’t care as Ryan Parker drops his new online rap project in person at the Showroom featuring special guests Seth, Myran, and Spirochill. Parker hits the stage at 8 p.m., and tickets are $20.

On June 2 at 7:30 p.m., experience a night of music that is out of this world with Space Junk Removal Service featuring Stephen Hamm.

These veterans of the West Coast music scene will be taking music lovers on an exploration of reggae, hip-hop, indie and art rock and more. In recent years Hamm has shifted his musical focus to mastering the Theremin which for those who don’t know is an early electronic instrument that one simply does not touch but rather plays it by interacting with magnetic fields around two antennas. Be sure to free up some space on your calendar for this unique evening of music. A an admission of $20 to $25 is suggested.

Life is not a dress rehearsal, so bring your talents to the stage on June 4. The Showroom’s ‘Dress Rehearsal Tuesday’, also known as their weekly open-mic night, gets underway at 7:30 p.m. It’s a great chance for newcomers to get their feet wet, or for past performers to bring new material to the stage. Whether you sing, play an instrument, or both it’s your time to shine. There will be two more open-mic nights scheduled for the same time later this month on June 11 and 18.

On June 7, delve in the genres of blues and R&B at 7:30 p.m. with the musicians of the Michael Patrick Band based out of Nanaimo. Patrick has been described as the real deal; tickets for this night of music are $25.

On June 8 at 7:30 p.m., come out to hear the heavenly sounds of indie singer-songwriter James Houlahan who is based out of the ‘City of Angels’. Houlahan will be making the Showroom one of his stops on his tour. Houlahan’s sixth full length album ‘Beyond the Borders’ was released in November, 2022. The songs of Houlahan’s latest album spans both the personal and universal as it combines themes of perseverance and new beginnings while exploring connections between people and the natural world. A donation of $20 is suggested.

On June 9, come out to the Showroom for 7:30 p.m. to enjoy an evening of some well executed indie and alternative rock along with some punk and rap with artists Jaden and Yukon. A donation of $15 to $20 is suggested.

On June 11, the fun and talent gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with the Eugene and Billie Show, where Eugene Smith and his co-host Bill Levity provide music and stage banter along with interviews and more music from their invited guests. Admission is by donation to be a part of the live studio audience. This dynamic duo will be back again at the same time on June 25.

On June 13, music lovers may feel like they have the luck of the Irish as multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriting recording artist Bruce Coughlan takes audience members on a Celtic Odyssey. Starting at 7:30 p.m., Coughlan will take attendees through a number of traditional Irish and Scottish influences that shaped his own vision in the timeless craft of balladry. Tickets are $25.

On June 14, come out and watch young Reuben Shepherd play the intimate space of the Duncan Showroom at 7:30 p.m. with Too Far Gone before he steps out on to the bigger stages of 39 Days, and Sunfest later this summer. On June 15, enjoy the sounds of acoustic slide and dobro guitars with the Blair Brothers at 7:30 p.m., as they mix it up with an array of covers and original songs. A donation of $20 is suggested.

On June 16, swing down to the Showroom at 7:30 p.m. for a night of psychedelic jungle funk with Apex Breaks. This octet keeps the flow of hype to hypnotic going in their sound as fans of this genre feel welcomed to the jungle. Tickets are $25.

On June 19, get with the program and head down to Duncan’s City Square between 5:30 and 7 p.m. and pick up some copies of the 2024 39 Days of July program to either hand out in your neighbourhood, or at your local business. While there, be sure to support the Duncan Cowichan Festival Society and purchase a few hot dogs for your supper.

On June 21, get lost in the sounds of six-piece alternative rock and fusion ensemble with Baba Chaka — a group comprised of post secondary students from the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

On June 22, at 7:30 p.m., head to the Showroom for another Hip-Hop Bonanza presented by Wes Paul.

On June 25, following the Eugene and Billy Show, cap off your month at the Showroom with some poetry in motion as Bill Levity hosts For the Love Of Words (FLOW) at 7:30 p.m. FLOW is a monthly invitation for all writers and poets to bring their inner thoughts and powerful words to the stage and a live audience. Each performer will be given five minutes to read their works. Admission is $5 for all performers, and $7 for audience members.

On June 28, the wait is over as the epic 39 Days of July festival gets underway at 12 p.m. at Charles Hoey Memorial Park. This festival like no other will run until Aug. 5 at 8 p.m.
