The Rotary Club of Duncan bestowed the honour of December's 'Student of the Month' to Frances Kelsey Secondary student Kate Steele. Steele was presented her award last month by club president Karen Thorington alongside Frances Kelsey principal Kevin van der Linden.
First established in 1930, the Duncan Rotary Club are known for enriching the lives of those in need as well as giving back to, and highlighting people in the community. Steele is being recognized for being a true leader within her student body.
Steele's teachers describe her as someone who is not afraid to take on challenges. She is a role model for her peers as she encourages inclusivity as the leader of the school's Rainbow Club. As a member of the Climate Action Group, she has represented her school in presentations of the school’s goals to the School District 79 senior management team. This senior not only excels academically, but also creatively and has been involved with several of the school's productions.
"Kate is always positive, friendly and super engaged in school activities," said Frances Kelsey drama teacher Anna Roberts.
Steele not only shines in her school, but also in the community as she also sings in her church choir, and volunteers at the Mill Bay Heritage Museum. Steele will graduate from Frances Kelsey this June, with plans to attend the University of Victoria in the fall.
