Chemainus Classical Concerts presents Exploring German Composers with violinist Philip Manning and pianist Robert Holliston at St. Michael’s Church on Sunday, Jan. 13, starting at 2 p.m.
Gifted and passionate about his music, Manning is a recent addition to the Victoria Symphony.
According to the Victoria Symphony, he is “equally at home as a solo, orchestral, or chamber musician. His playing has been described as ‘virtuosic’, ‘passionate’ and praised for his ‘attention to detail’. He has won many awards and scholarships for solo and chamber performances, delighting audiences in Canada and the United States.”
Upon his return to Canada, he’s been a busy soloist.
In this show, he joins forces with Holliston: a versatile pianist who works with Pacific Opera Victoria and also makes frequent guest appearances on CBC Radio.
According to Pacific Opera Victoria, Holliston “has given pre-performance lectures for Pacific Opera Victoria since 1993. For many years he also served as POV’s répétiteur, chorus master, and principal coach. He hosts Pacific Opera’s free community series Inside Opera with Robert Holliston, as well as the new community education series Opera Motifs, and many other community engagement events.
Holliston is also head of keyboard at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where he teaches piano and music history and acts as vocal and chamber music coach. He was a founding director of VCM Opera Studio and has conducted many classes in Canada and the U.S. He has recorded CDs with the popular salon ensemble Viveza, trombonist Ian McDougall, clarinetist Patricia Kostek, tenor Ken Lavigne, Tom Holliston, Show Business Giants, and members of the Hornby Island Ensemble and has collaborated with many of Canada’s leading singers.
The pair will explore the expressive depths of works by Schumann, Brahms, and other great German masters in what is sure to be a feast for the ears.
