Lila Community Choir is presenting ‘Sing for the Trees’ on Saturday, June 8 at Duncan United Church starting at 2 p.m.
“Every year the choir offers an annual community fundraising event. This year the Lila Community Choir is raising funds in support of the Where Do We Stand advocacy group,” said chorus director Cari Burdett.
The concert repertoire includes many songs in support of forests, mountains and trees.
“The choir will sing in a wide range of genres including; gospel, world, folk and pop. We are excited to have the Swallowtail children’s choir from the Nature Homeschooling Group bring their delightful energy to the choir this year,” she continued.
Special guests this year will include Sami Al-khalili, Hannah Seinen, Quin Etheridge-Pedden, Tanya Gillespie, and CelloBride.
Seinen is a singer/songwriter from the Cowichan Valley who has deep roots in classical music. She likes to tell stories with music and in February released her debut album, Shape of a Girl, produced by Adam Dobres. Etherige-Pedden, another emerging B.C. musician, performs through 11 strings including a five-string fiddle, and a guitar. Al-khalili is a beatboxing, poetry reading, vocal performance student in Victoria, who enjoys pushing the boundaries of voice and sound.
CelloBride is a young Canadian cellist from Quebec who graduated from the Juilliard School with both a Bachelor and a Masters of Music. While living in New York City for almost a decade, she has performed as the principal cellist of numerous orchestras such as the Juilliard School Orchestra, the Salome Chamber Orchestra and the International Chamber Soloists. Her performing career took her to venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Metropolitain Museum to name a few. She is now fully engaged in raising environmental awareness through her short artistic video series: Voicing the Forest.
Joining them is Cowichan Tribes Elder Robert George Qwiyahwultuhw, who grew up in the Duncan area and now mentors youth in community and enjoys bringing people together with song and story.
