Photographer Jules Sherred takes viewers into his world of food and more in the exhibit Nourish: Food Photography Celebration, which is on at the Portals Gallery in Duncan now until Feb. 2.

Sherred is a local commercial food photographer and stylist, and owner of Polaris Creative. He’s also the author of an upcoming cookbook Crip up the Kitchen: Realistic Tips, Tricks, and Recipes for the Disabled Kitchen.

His exhibit examines food, culture and disability.

CVAC describes the show as “a celebration of local food and beverage producers, farmers, vineyards, and the restaurants who kept us fed during COVID-19 in the face of impossible circumstances. Printed on canvas, the majority of the images will feature Cowichan and Gulf Islands growers, producers, and restaurants, with one image paying tribute to crops lost due to wildfire.”

Polaris Creative is part of the Island Good brand and sources ingredients from Cowichan Valley farmers for both commercial and fine art work.

CVAC has also held over its first show of 2022 until Feb. 11. Animalia is described as “going to the dogs! And the cats, and donkeys and giraffes…

“Wild or domestic, mythological or real, mammals or insects, large or small, animals play the starring role in this art show,” says a press release.

The exhibit is comprised of more than 85 images and sculptures from realistic to impressionist, providing “a celebration of humans’ best friends.”

Check out both exhibits at the gallery Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday noon to 4 p.m.
