The Cowichan Folk Guild is hosting a coffeehouse on Saturday, April 9, featuring Tony Turner.

“Tony Turner’s life-affirming, articulate folk-pop melodies are beautifully delivered with his rich baritone voice,” says a press release about the event. “Along with musical portraits of love, nature and regular working folk, Turner’s songs are as diverse as this country. From ‘Circle of Song’, his much-loved anthem of unity recently published in Rise Again, to his award-winning sing-along ‘Harperman’, Turner channels the mood of the times and the ties that bind.”

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Duncan United Church Hall. Entry is $5 for Folk Guild members and $10 for non-members.

Time is almost up for artists wanting to enter the Cowichan Valley Fine Art Show for 2022.

The show runs from May 5 to 29, but registration for artists is from March 28 to April 9, so get cracking if you want to be part of the event.

Organizers say they have some special new events planned for the art show, including a preview for art buyers, an art contest, and a Mother’s Day tea. Also for the first time this year cash prizes will be awarded.

The event has run for more than 50 years in the Cowichan Valley, and will feature work from more than 100 artists. Jurors for the show are sculptor Brent Cooke, portrait artist David Goatley and photographer Doug Clement.

“The highlight of the art show season in the region, the show displays outstanding artistic talent in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and other mediums, all produced in the Cowichan Valley and southern Vancouver Island,” says a press release for the show.

The show will be a hybrid online and in person show, with viewers able to see work online and also at the Cowichan Valley Arts Council gallery spaces in the Cowichan Community Centre in Duncan.

“The exciting part this year is that we are getting together again,” said CVAC president Janet Magdanz. “That’s why we have added a few new events so artists and art lovers can enjoy a social time amidst the art in the gorgeous gallery setting.”

Tickets for the special events are available on the CVAC website at https://cowichanvalleyartscouncil.ca

Only 30 tickets are available for the buyer’s preview, taking place on May 4, and they are $20 each.

Opening night tickets for after the buyer’s preview are $10.

The Mother’s Day tea is on May 8 and tickets are $5. Finally, Art Attack on May 13 will blend art and musical performances, with artists creating a painting on the spot inspired by live music. Tickets for that event are $10.
