VIDEO: Timbersports joins the fun for 75th anniversary

Big crowd enjoys the excitement of a traditional favourite event

A large crowd came out to Saywell Park Sunday afternoon, Aug. 18 to enjoy the show as timbersports made a welcome return to Lake Cowichan for the 75th annivesary celebrations.

Forty years ago, the competitors at these events were workers at the various logging operations around Cowichan Lake. So, members of the crowd could cheer on their friends, relatives, and neighbours as they sweated through a wide variety of events that were based originally on aspects of logging.

Camps like Caycuse, Gordon River, Pacific, and Renfrew competed against each other. There was even a pretty good team made up of members of the local RCMP, the Queen’s Cowboys.

But time has changed the forest industry, and the camps and all those workers have moved on, leaving timbersports to a group of enthusiasts, who compete for prize money.

However, the show is still exciting, and lots of families stood around behind the safety fence to watch axe throwing, hand saw, and power saw events.
