Update: due to the snowstorm that hit the Cowichan Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 20, the live nativity has been cancelled for 2022.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is gearing up to present their free 28th annual live nativity pageant on Thursday, Dec. 22 and Friday, Dec. 23.

There will be two performances each day at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at 1815 Tzouhalem Rd. This live nativity has become a family favourite in the Cowichan Valley,

“The annual nativity pageant performed by members and friends of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has become one of our family’s cherished Christmas traditions,” said Brett Laurie, who is playing Joseph this year. “Our family’s first experience with the pageant was over 20 years ago when I was just a small child, and played one of the townspeople. My family bundled up and went to participate in the live performances for the very first time and were impressed with the wonder of it all. The music, the lights, the costumes, the people, the animals, the oldest and most dear story ever told, combined, brought such a delightful feeling of warmth and goodness. We loved it so much that each year since, my family would participate, with me playing pages for the wise men, stable boys or one of the shepherds in the fields. It has been truly a family affair for us over the years.”

Laurie is now married and he and his new wife, Belle, will be playing Joseph and Mary.

The production, which follows a very traditional format, is accompanied by the playing of recorded Christmas carols, sung beautifully by the world-famous Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. People are invited to stay after the performances for free hot chocolate and cookies inside the church building. All non-perishable food donations for the local food bank are welcome. This production is indeed outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather and bring a blanket if you think you might need one. Seating is provided.
