The town’s elected officials have selected the recipients of this year’s grants in aid.

The grants in aid awarded total $5,000 of the budgeted $6,000, allowing for $1,000 of wiggle room for late applications.

“There are always late ones,” councillor Tim McGonigle said, during mayor and council’s Tuesday, March 8, budget meeting.

The grants in are as follows; $800 to the Lake Cowichan Salmon Mushroom Festival; $1,000 for the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society, for salmon, trout, and fry salvaging efforts; $200 for the Cowichan Rocks Curling Society for their annual kids bonspiel; $1,000 for the Kaatza Daycare Society for operational funds; $500 for Lake Cowichan Secondary School’s Dry Grad 2011 white-water rafting trip; $500 for Lady of the Lake Society’s operational requirements; $1,000 for the Lake Cowichan Secondary School scholarships.

While not all organizations received the full amount they’d requested, the only one to be fully denied was the Cowichan Folk Guild, who requested $600 for a printer purchase.

The reasoning is that Folk Guild isn’t based in Lake Cowichan.
