The South Cowichan Healthcare Auxiliary is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Cécile Pelletier, the SCHA’s communications director, said the auxiliary, which was first formed in 1972, has a long history in the community.
“We are 17 active members who volunteer in diverse areas of the community,” she said.
“Members log volunteer hours at the Cowichan District Hospital’s gift shop, at the Thrift Store (HATS) in Duncan, at Cairnsmore Place and at Canadian Blood Services blood donor clinics.”
Pelletier said the SCHA also raises funds for Cowichan Hospice, Cairnsmore Place necessities, and equipment for Cowichan District Hospital.
She said the auxiliary’s many fundraisers include the Lemon and Lavender Vintage Tea in April, Strawberry Tea at the Community Flower Show at Cobble Hill Hall in May, Christmas Craft and Gift Fair in November, as well as garage sales and pop-up markets held throughout the year.
“We also sponsor a $750 bursary for a Frances Kelsey High School graduate entering into the varied fields of the medical profession,” Pelletier said.
“In addition, we donate coffee for the CDH oncology and fund miscellaneous charities as the need arises.”
To commemorate the anniversary, the 17 current members of the SCHA will be hosting a new Harvest Tea on Oct. 15 at the Mill Bay Community Hall at 11 a.m.
Tickets for the event are $10 each and available at the door.
Pelletier said the SCHA is always looking for new volunteers to help out.
She said the auxiliary meets the second Tuesday of each month, except July and August, at the Mill Bay League Community Hall at 12:30 p.m. and new members with new energy and new ideas are always welcome to attend.
“We understand that volunteering is not for everyone, but you can still help us by collecting your Country Grocer grocery receipts from the Cobble Hill location,” she said.
“Country Grocer will give us one per cent of the total receipts in County Grocer cash cards which we use to buy our annual baking supplies. Look for the box at the store exit on your right.”
