Sahtlam Volunteer Firefighters Association has a long history of supporting charities local and national, but under COVID-19 rules getting out to fundraise has been a problem.

It was proposed to the membership that the association should step up and fill that void with donations from their account. The firefighters have three charities that they will be supporting with the donations. Cowichan Valley food bank, Muscular Dystrophy Canada and Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The CFFF donation will be made in the name of Dustin Engel. Engel was a young Sahtlam firefighter who was only 19 years old at the time of his death while on his way to a call in the afternoon of June 20, 2004. His name is enshrined on the Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa.

Each charity will receive a cheque of $750 to help with their ongoing efforts of support locally and nationally. Members in the picture are, from left, Mike Lees, Lona Maas, Lt. Colton Mann and Chief Randy Busch. (Submitted)
