Those attending the Friday, February 11 Spirit of BC free skating event at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena were in for a special treat.

In addition to free skating action, those attending became some of the first to benefit from many of the arena’s recently-completed renovations, which opened up earlier that afternoon.

Warm upstairs seating was completed in time for the event, in addition to a new skate shop, a new concession area, and a new grand entrance-way.

The partial renovation completion quickly became the talk of the town, resulting in a much higher than usual turnout at the weekend’s minor hockey games.

Grand opening

The Cowichan Lake Sports Arena’s grand opening has been scheduled for Saturday, March 12, beginning with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Speeches by various dignitaries involved in the upgrade will be made, and an official ribbon-cutting will take place.

From 10:45 to noon, a public open house will be held, with various stations being hosted throughout the building, highlighting exactly what the renovations entailed.

From noon to 2 p.m., a free public skate and curling event will take place.

Beginning at 7 p.m., a 40 years of Appollos Alumni Hockey Game will take place, closing off the day’s festivities.
