Principles for Living: Shift happens: adjusting is good

I’ve been getting adjusted every second week since I was a kid.

I’ve been getting adjusted every second week since I was a kid. It’s something I literally grew up with, like any good health habit. I believe there is nothing (legal anyway) that can affect the entirety of a person more powerfully and quickly as a chiropractic adjustment.

To this day, after receiving my biweekly adjustment, I am struck by two things.

First, by how free my movement is. It’s like gravity has been suspended. I feel lighter.

My spine has been ‘flossed’ and despite a lifetime of aggressive sports habits, the steady, progressive and silent encroachment of spinal decay has been suspended once again.

Second, my mind seems to receive a similar benefit. My thinking seems clearer and I feel more peaceful.

I always wondered why and how I could feel so quickly freshened by an adjustment. Especially since I am a hyper, no pain no gain, Type A person. But then years ago I stumbled on an article from the study of psychoneuroimmunology that helped frame my observation.

The article clearly explained that the nervous system is responsible for our experience of life. It literally serves as the interface between what goes on ‘out there’ and our reality ‘in here’.

And that since our nervous system establishes our experience of life, any interference to it makes our experience of life less than ideal.

It makes me think of what a colleague once related to me.

He explained that he wasn’t a natural student and by the second year of chiropractic school, he was ready to drop out.

“The only thing that kept me going was the feeling of clarity I got every time my neck was adjusted. I just wanted to be able to do that for people.”

I am so fortunate to be able to help people become ‘lighter’, both physically and mentally. If people stick to their care plan, it becomes almost inevitable, across age groups.

It just goes to show you it’s never too late for shift to happen.

Aloha and peace, Carl
