The Cowichan Women Against Violence Society has a new executive director.
Jan Bate has taken the helm from outgoing executive director Debbie Berg, who had filled the role since October 2018.
“We are very excited to welcome Jan into this role,” said Jaime Garneau, CWAV’s board chair. “Jan will be building on the growth of our housing, advocacy and counselling programs developed by our outgoing executive director, Debra Berg. Under Debra’s directorship we have increased our housing programs and advocacy capabilities to better serve the vulnerable women and children in our community.”
Bate has been the society’s resource development director since March 2020 and was instrumental in keeping the doors open for those who needed services during the pandemic, by partnering with local businesses, charities and individuals to get the required support.

Active in Vancouver Island community development and women’s anti-violence work for the past 30 years, Bate brings with her a wealth education, knowledge, and experience to the position.
Holding an MA in Leadership and Training, a BA in Social Development Studies, and being a certified Co-Active coach, Bate has previously held the executive director role at both Bridges for Women Society in Victoria, and the Westcoast Community Resources Society in Ucluelet.
“Jan is passionate about community engagement and is excited to build respectful relationships with the Cowichan Tribes and all the First Peoples of the Cowichan Valley,” Garneau said. “She hopes to support many of the community tables, housing coalitions, and inter-cultural services in the Valley, and to enhance a coordinated approach to the housing and support needs of the under-served women, children, and families.”
