Fundraising auction aims to keep things safe with Cowichan's Marine SAR

Bid on items until March 22

When the call comes in, the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 34 gear up to go on the water to face the unknown to provide rescue and save lives.

Now, RCM-SAR station 34 is holding their annual auction to raise money for vital gear and equipment to ensure that the current 22 members can fulfill their roles safely.

"The online auctions have been a good fundraising tool for us for the last four years," said RCM-SAR 34 director of fundraising Ross Pierce. "I am excited about going into year five, I believe our name and service provided has reached and will continue to reach more people in the Mill Bay to Duncan area.

This year's online auction begins on March 14 and will close at 9 p.m. on March 22 — leaving participants a week to do their bidding.

"There are a large number of products and services up for bidding with this year's auction ranging from items for your pets, and cards for local restaurants, to a weekend getaway overlooking the Port of San Juan," said Pierce.

Last year RCM-SAR 34 raised $26,000 of their initial $30,000 goal. Some of the funds raised go towards vital equipment such as binoculars, and they recently purchased new night goggles, which are valued at $9,000. Pierce would like to see this year's auction equal or exceed the amount raised last year.

"We continue to raise more funds each year, and I am hoping that trend continues," said Pierce. "The money raised will go towards boat maintenance and new equipment. Our Fast Response Craft requires a total overhaul or will need to be replaced with a new craft. A portion of proceeds of the auction will be set aside for the new craft. "

There are plenty of new items this year, so those wanting to get in on the bidding can visit hibid.ca and click on RCM-SAR 34 to view all items up for auction. For for more information on how to make a difference visit their website rcmsar34.com or email Ross Pierce at piercr3@gmail.com.

"The annual auction is very important to RCM-SAR 34 as the proceeds do go to maintenance of equipment but also allows for the purchase of new equipment so we can do our job with more effectiveness while on the water," said Pierce. "Any fundraising efforts goes to saving lives on the water. I feel that the community businesses, and the private donors, are aware that the service provided by the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue is invaluable, and available to those in need on a year round basis.

RCM-SAR 34 are always looking to recruit new volunteers, and will begin training mid April. For more information on joining the crew email station34@rcmsar.com or call coxswain Mark Winfield at 604-338-7964.
