The slogan on the front of the Elder College program brochure says it all: “Join us and broaden your horizons!”

This fall the volunteers of the Elder College Advisory Committee have come up with 64 different sessions to help make this happen. No textbooks or tests are required, just an urge to learn something new.

There are sessions on the benefits of hypnosis, on portrait photography, on writing your memoirs and how to play bridge.

There are field trips — just like being back in elementary school! For instance, you can visit the Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve or an automated dairy farm.

There are audio visual presentations such as an upcoming one on river cruising in Western Russia.

There are informative courses like Cannabis 101 that will explain all the terms we are hearing about more often. Maybe you’ve been wondering what Alexa is all about, then check out a course titled “Beam Me Up, Scotty!”

A full list of all the Elder College courses is available at www.islandnet.com/eldercollege, in the flyer available in places like the public library and recreation centres and in the Fall Recreation Guide. If you are interested in learning something that isn’t listed, or you have something you could teach others, use the website to let the Elder College Advisory Committee know.

There is an annual $5 Elder College Membership fee payable when you register for courses, and a minimal charge for each course. Register in person at Island Savings Centre in Duncan or Kerry Park Recreation Centre in Mill Bay, or by telephone to either place, or online at www.reccowichan.ca.
