The BC Forest Discovery Centre is reopening to the public beginning Friday.

The 100-acre site located just outside of Duncan has set out a plan and a schedule for a phased reopening, with the first phase to start Friday, June 12 and run until Monday, June 15.

Like many other businesses and attractions, the FDC was closed in March due to COVID-19.

Between June 12 and June 15 visitors will be able to walk the grounds, go through the main building and the schoolhouse and are welcome to bring picnic lunches and games to enjoy on the grounds. The washrooms will also be open. The train will not be available for rides yet and there will be no concession open. Admission is just $5.

Starting June 18, the FDC will open most of the major buildings and provide a limited concession. Admission will remain at the reduced rate of $5.

On June 25 the FDC will offer its first train rides of the year, though there will be limited seating to maintain social distancing. Check www.bcforestdiscoverycentre.com for admission rates.

While all amenities will be available for visitors by the end of June, special summer events have been cancelled due to COVID-19.

“The safety of our staff, volunteers and guests is of paramount importance to us, and we will be implementing safety protocols to help keep everyone healthy,” a press release from the FDC said. “We suggest you visit our website before planning your trip to the Centre for a full explanation of our safety plans.

“As we move towards the ‘new normal’, please have patience with our staff and volunteers as they do their best to make each person’s visit a fun, safe, and healthy experience.”

The Forest Discovery Centre will be open five days a week from Thursday to Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
