There will be two chances in June for people to learn more about what’s happening in the Koksilah watershed. (Citizen file)

The Cowichan Watershed Board has three speaker events coming in June.

First up is a Community Update on the Koksilah Watershed on June 6 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This will be an online presentation about summer water flows, watershed planning, flow monitoring and drought response updates, groundwater research, agricultural producer initiatives and more.

There will be opening comments from Cowichan Tribes and speakers from the province, watershed researchers, stewardship organizations, industry associations and others.

Next up is an entry in the speaker series: 1 Fish, 2 Fish, Why Not More Fish?

This presentation will be held on Monday, June 19 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the VIU Cowichan Campus in lecture hall 140.

Fisheries biologists including Cheri Ayers and Melissa Evans will share their view from under the surface of local rivers. In-depth salmon enumeration studies are in progress to better understand which fish live where in our aquatic ecosystems, and build our understanding of what we can do to bring the numbers back up.

Lastly, on June 26, there will be a Koksilah watershed meet and greet at the Hub at Cowichan Station from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The event is free, and there will be tea and treats.

Information booths will be set up around the HUB gym. Come meet some of the people working on Xwulqw’selu/Koksilah research, restoration, innovation and solutions. Maybe volunteer, or learn how you can help if you live, work or play in the Koksilah watershed.

The Cowichan Wooden Boat Society has organized a Father’s Day Poker Ride fundraiser event for Sunday, June 18.

Cyclists are invited to take a 28 km circuit from Glenora Trail Head Park to 66 Mile Trestle and back, collecting poker cards along the circuit.

Collect all the cards and you will have a chance to win the grand prize, chosen from eligible participants based on poker hand (so it doesn’t matter how slow you go), of a Slane e-bike from O2Ride Inc. There are also 50 other prizes to be won.

Snacks, drinks and live music will be included.

It’s $30 for adults who pre-register, or $35 on the day. Children (over 12) register for $15. Under 12s are free. Call the Cowichan Maritime Centre to register at 250-746-4955 or drop by in person at 1761 Cowichan Bay Rd.

All proceeds go to the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre to help restore the historic 100 year old pier.
