Capture the Rain campaign hosts workshop with specialist Ken Nentwig

The Cowichan Watershed Board’s Capture the Rain campaign is presenting a workshop Saturday, Dec. 9 in Duncan about how we can better use our precious resource.

Rainwater harvesting specialist and trainer Ken Nentwig will discuss how to better manage summer water needs as we adjust to the region’s changing climate. He will review the basic components of an efficient rainwater harvesting system and how to size your system to meet your needs.

It will be an interactive session with time for questions and ideas.

The workshop takes place from 10 a.m. to noon at the Island Savings Centre in the Mesachie Room. The cost is $10 at the door or online at https://goo.gl/Eixjvi

There will be a second related workshop on Jan. 20, 2018.

Free skating, face painting, goodies and more for Canada 150 Sunday in Duncan

Sunday, Dec. 10, is Canada 150 Skating day.

As part of this nation-wide celebration, the Island Savings Centre will be hosting a free family skate from 1–3 p.m.

Activities will include hockey with the Cowichan Capitals, a physical literacy obstacle course, and face-painting. There will also be free cake, hot chocolate, and lots of prizes.

This skating session is sponsored by PLAY Cowichan and the Government of Canada.

Hanukkah celebration Wednesday in

Duncan with menorah lighting

There will be a public menorah lighting in Duncan City Square will celebrate Hanukkah on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

Starting at 4 p.m., the entire community is invited to join this Jewish observance, where an eight foot tall menorah will be lit, sufganiyot, described as Israeli jelly donuts will be served along with chocolate gelt, and there will be dreidels. It’s all to the sounds of Hanukkah music.

Mayor Phil Kent of the City of Duncan will be there for the event. The menorah is making its way across Vancouver Island to mark the season.

“It is wonderful for our community to experience the support being demonstrated by the provincial government and the mayors of our participating municipalities in marking Hanukkah this year,” said Rabbi Meir Kaplan, director, Chabad Vancouver Island, in a statement about the event.

Free workshop for seniors next week in Duncan about Options for Care

Cowichan Family Caregivers Support Society is presenting the third in a series of six free workshops for seniors on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1-3 p.m. at Duncan United Church.

The topic will be “Options for Care” with presenters from the Duncan Community Health Center, Nurse Next Door, and the Better at Home program.
