Coming up in Cowichan: Learn about behaviour centre, genealogy, fish kill, and get haunted

The BC SPCA is inviting the community to come and learn more about the Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre being built in North Cowichan.

It is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 17 from 7-8 p.m.

In attendance will be Craig Daniell, CEO, Shoni Field, chief development officer and Adrienne McBride, senior director, Community Animal Services.

"With the Cowichan community animal centre closing for construction of the new Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre, the BC SPCA wants the Cowichan community to know what animal welfare supports will remain in the community throughout and post construction," said a press release for the session.

A free family history class in advanced English genealogy is being given Saturday, Oct. 19.

The class takes place at the Duncan library in the Cowichan Community Centre from 3-4:30 p.m.

The Cowichan Watershed Board's Speaker Night returns with a presentation titled "Cowichan CSI (Crisis Scene Investigation): Dr. Ken Ashley Refects on the 2023 Cowichan River Fish Kill, and Where We Go from Here".

The event is being put on in partnership with VIU Cowichan and WildWings Festival 2024 on Monday, Oct. 21 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Cowichan Campus of VIU in lecture hall 140.

"Ken is highly respected as both a biologist and engineer, and he has been generously volunteering that unique blend of expertise to help community partners here understand what happened in the Cowichan River in 2023, and how to respond," said a press release for the event. "He will discuss how the natural environment  interacted with the built environment here in the Cowichan watershed to cause the 2023 fish kill, and what can be done to create a sustainable eco-centric community in the future."

The event is free to attend.

Country Maples RV Resort in Chemainus is hosting its 4th Annual Halloween Haunt on Oct. 25 and 26.

The haunted house runs from 7-9 p.m., and anyone who comes dressed in a costume has a chance to win one free night in one of the RV rentals with the purchase of a second night or two free nights of camping for 2025.

All attendees have the chance to win one of two mini golf passes for four, and all children will get a surprise goodie bag.

Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for kids and $25 for a family of four. Campers get in for $5 for adults, $3 for kids and $15 for a family of four.
