After a two-year hiatus, Youbou will once again become a picker’s paradise as the annual progressive community garage sale returns on Saturday, May 14.

“New treasures await the adventurous as Youbou homeowners offer their no-longer-loved items to bargain hunters from 9:30 a.m. to 1 pm.,” explained Julia Martinusen, Youbou Community Association chair. “And, don’t miss the garage sale at historic Youbou Church, where homemade goodies will be on sale.”

It’s a win-win for everyone as sellers can get rid of their no-longer-wanted items and buyers can find new things for their collections.

A list of participating homes can be picked up at Cassy’s Coffeehouse, Youbou General Store, and Daly’s Auto Centre in Youbou. Addresses will also be posted on Youbou Community Associations’ facebook page and on the Mile 77 Park sign as you enter town.

“Or simply look for the balloons flying outside participating homes,” Martinusen said.

The Duncan United Church Social Justice Team and Freedom from War Coalition is inviting everyone to a presentation on “Apartheid in Palestine” on Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m.

Presenter Keith Simmonds is a United Church of Canada minister in Duncan who served as a Human Rights Observer in Palestine and Israel for the World Council of Churches in 2020.

“Having met with Jewish Israeli peace activists and human rights campaigners who were actively trying to have Israeli politicians charged by the International Criminal Courts, he is not surprised many have declared Israel’s government to be an apartheid regime. His personal experience provides evidence and supports that conclusion. He hopes this presentation will help galvanize people to oppose the regime currently controlling Israel and Palestine,” says a press release for the event.

This event will consist of a brief background video, images recorded during Simmonds’s stint with his commentary, as well as an open floor Q&A.
