The Chemainus + District Chamber of Commerce is inviting residents and local businesses to come together for Our Chemainus – A Celebration, a free community event taking place Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church, 2858 Mill St.
The event aims to highlight Chemainus as a great place to live, work and play, while showcasing the organizations, groups and businesses that form the foundation of the community.
“There’s no band playing and no speeches. This is purely a ‘hi neighbour’ mingle,” said organizer Roy Summerhayes who sits on the chamber’s board of directors. “It’s just the chamber reaching out a bit to promote the community.”
A “hi neighbour” event is an informal, community-building gathering designed to encourage people to meet, mingle and learn more about the people and groups around them.
“Most people in Chemainus probably don't know where Willow Street is,” said Summerhayes. “This is a get-together to let people come and see what makes up this town.”
Summerhayes said the first event took place in 2019 and was a success, but the pandemic put plans on hold.
“We had one in 2019, very successful, but you know what happened in February the next year,” he said.
The event is open to all residents and business people in the Chemainus area, and there is no cost to attend or to participate.
Tables have already sold out for this year’s event, with confirmed participants including Chemainus Communities in Bloom, Cowichan Neighbourhood House, the Chemainus Historical Society, Rotary Club of Chemainus, and local businesses including Violet Wild and more.
