Austin: Holiday fun in the offing

The 50 Plus Activity Centre has been busy these past few months with several events and trips.

Along with the bingo on Wednesday and Sunday, regular exercise classes, line dancing, bridge instruction, canasta and cribbage, we now have euchre on Mondays. And, the craft ladies sew up a storm every Thursday.

Drop in and check out our monthly calendar.

On June 25 we held the Annual Golden Agers’ Tea Dance and Hat Parade. Dress was semiformal, everyone wore a special hat to be judged for prizes and a delicious afternoon tea was served by our volunteers.

Our Thanksgiving banquet was well-attended on Oct. 8. The Golden Agers Society supplied the roast beef and pork, gravies, buns and condiments with those in attendance supplying several delectable dishes to share. Desserts were plentiful and no one went home hungry. Our decorating committee outdid themselves again.

We’ve had some enjoyable trips in the past few months to Coombs, Qualicum and Woodgrove Centre and to the Chemainus Theatre for Footloose, a fantastic musical, and Hilda’s Yard, an especially good comedy. Trips are for members only and if you want a break from driving, come with us.

Our next trip to the Chemainus Theatre is on Thursday, Nov. 17 for A Christmas Story, an annual TV classic. And on Friday, Dec. 16 we plan on attending The Singing Christmas Tree in Nanaimo. We stop for dinner at the MGM along the way. Everyone enjoyed it so much last year we hope to make it an annual event.

Saturday, Nov. 5 is our annual fall bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be new and used items, crafts, baking and books galore for sale. Table rental is $15 and they are going fast. Vendors are required to book and pay by Nov. 2. A fresh homemade lunch will be sold from the kitchen as well as desserts and beverages.

Saturday, Dec. 10 will be our joint Christmas Banquet with the C.L. District Seniors’ Association. Doors open at 4 p.m. Some of our volunteers need a break, so this year we are planning a catered turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

On Thursday, Dec. 22, you’ll find us enjoying Cookies and Carols. Members bring sweets to share and we join the Goodtime Boys in singing Christmas carols from 1 p.m.

As of last week the C.L. Golden Agers membership was at 328. Our membership fee is only $15 per year which rewards members with subsidies for trips and banquets and one ambulance reimbursement per year. Memberships for 2017 go on sale Thursday, Dec. 1.

However, we are still having problems getting volunteers to help with all our various activities especially bingo on Wednesday.

If you have ever worked on a bingo or want to learn some new skills we need callers, computer and till people. Volunteers are supplied with a free lunch up to $6 and callers are paid an honorarium of $20 per time.

As an unknown author once wrote, “Volunteering is the ultimate form of democracy.” Hope to see you at the 50 Plus Activity Centre soon. Call 250-749-6121 for further details.
