For her sixth birthday, Jenae Weir opted to have friends and family make a donation of food or money toward the Lake Cowichan Animal Rescue Society, in lieu of presents.

Her effort raised $101 and some food for the organization’s many cats.

“These kittens are so cute and they look like they need food,” the youngster said.

Weir also makes an effort to drop coins into the cans the society has set up at various businesses in town.

Recently inundated with cats, society representative Mike Bedard said that they’re in need of foster homes even more than usual.
