The Cowichan Rugby Football Club is looking for new or experienced players who want to give their sport a try.

Both the women’s and men’s teams are actively recruiting players for the 2018-19 season. Experience is an asset, but isn’t a necessity to participate.

“Playing rugby is a great way to be active, meet people and be social,” veteran women’s player Sherry Spence said.

The women’s team has been running for 14 years, Spence noted, and includes players at a wide range of skill levels, from national team members Laura Russell and Tyson Beukeboom to players who hadn’t played the sport at all prior to last season.

“The whole league is considered developmental to help with the growth of the game, so every team we play will have new players,” Spence said.

The First Division men’s team won two Island championships last year, the Times Cup and Cowichan Cup, and the club is aiming to add a Third Division team and an Over 40 side this season. It has been several years since Cowichan fielded a regular Thirds team, and the club has never had a full-time Over 40s team.

While the Firsts practice twice a week and play nearly every weekend, the schedules will be lighter for the Third Division and Over 40 sides, who will train on Thursday evenings and play a couple of games a month, half at home and half on the road.

“We’re looking for guys looking to give it a try,” recruiter Gord McGeachy said. “Maybe athletes looking for something different.”
